THE WISE AND WITTY  WOMEN OF AUSTEN'S AND SHAKESPEARE'S COMEDIES

A 93-page thesis completed in the Tulane University Honors Program

Abstract Excerpt:

This research project is an analysis of feminine wit and wisdom as it appears in some of the most significant romantic comedies of the literary canon: Much Ado About Nothing, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Pride and Prejudice.

Witty women and the problems they represent help us better understand the comedic genre as a means of providing social, political, moral, and religious commentary within its cultural context.
